We learned of this Monday afternoon of this week. Commissioner Rubio was immediately very concerned, knowing there are concerns related to the current redemption center location, and shared the concerns raised by community members.
The very next day, the city asked the state that the decision-making process include community voices, and we learned that the application to the Oregon Liquor and Cannabis Commission does in fact include a 30-day comment period.
In addition to expressing concerns with state leadership, Commissioner Rubio has also directed the city planning department to explore alternative locations in North Portland. She has also directed me to begin conversations with the Oregon Beverage Recycling Cooperative, and I have done that at a staff level. I will be meeting with OBRC leadership next week.
Please know that the initial administrative decision (LUCS) related to the proposed site isn’t coming anytime soon.
