Historic Jefferson High School being demolished
Jefferson High School in North Portland is now set for complete demolition, abandoning previous plans to salvage part of the historic building. The project team, alongside Portland Public Schools and leading architecture firms, is contemplating three options for the site’s redevelopment, favoring a new construction on Killingsworth Street. Despite debates over student disruption during construction, the decision aims to streamline the process and avoid relocation. The Historic Landmarks Commission supports reclassifying the 1909 building, recognizing its altered state and lack of original architectural integrity. The project team intends to return for further review once a decision is reached.
