Rolling Through Turbulence: Portland’s NE 33rd Bike Lane Controversy

In a recent meeting, Portland Bureau of Transportation (PBOT) leader Art Pearce addressed the controversial bike lane removal on NE 33rd Avenue, citing unintended emotional harm to neighbors. Frustration escalated as committee member David Stein expressed difficulty supporting PBOT, highlighting challenges in building bike infrastructure.

Pearce defended PBOT’s track record, attributing recent missteps to budget cuts and staff reductions amid the rush of Quick Build projects. He stressed the need for increased investment to ensure proper city transformation and revealed a new “middle path” design for the 33rd Avenue bikeway.

This episode underscores the delicate balance between community engagement and infrastructure goals, urging a more transparent and collaborative approach to avoid contentious missteps.
